Liberty Students Receive Lesson on GMOs via FaceTime gmo

On Friday, February 10, 2017, Liberty Junior High Resource Teacher, Mrs. Browne, invited Genetic Scientist, Mrs. Ehlert, to participate in a class discussion, via a FaceTime conference call, to help address the issue of genetically modified organisms or GMOs.  As a result of this real life experience, so many students were motivated and empowered to keep researching, on their own, and continue on their learning quest about GMOs and other equally important issues in science.

Little Free Libraries library

Burbank School District 111 will be opening eight new Little Free Libraries located outside every school in the district!  You are invited to attend the official dedication at Tobin School 8501 S. Narragansett.  We will introduce the “Literally Loving Literacy” project that has been organized to support and maintain each Little Free Library.  The core mission of this event is to address children’s access to books before and after school and all summer long!  Click here for more information.

Parent Curriculum Night curriculum night

Please join us for our upcoming Parent Night on February 7, 2017 at 7:00 pm at Liberty Junior High School.  The topic will be Stress and Children: Creating a Calm Environment.  In today’s rapidly changing world, children face unique social and emotional challenges.  Many children feel increased stress and anxiety.  Educators and parents can assist students in developing a life-long capacity for concentration, patience and resilience.  Professional staff from Sertoma Center will provide parents with the tools they can use to empower their students to engage in techniques to relax their minds and calm their bodies.

Reavis Kiddie Camp Fundraiser dance

Reavis Dance Team is hosting their 2017 Kiddie Camp Fundraiser.  Campers will attend a dance clinic to learn a short routine to perform with the dance team during half time of a varsity basketball game on February 10!

Reavis Cheer Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance dad dance

The Reavis Cheerleaders will be sponsoring a Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance on February 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the cafeteria at Reavis High School.  All District 111 K-6 female students and their dads.  

 

 

Young Authors Night author

District 111 is hosting a Young Authors Contest again this year.  The contest is open to all kindergarten through 8th grade students and entries are due January 20.  The Young Authors Contest promotes writing and creativity by encouraging children to write an original story and present it in book form.

5Essentials Survey essentials

Burbank District 111 is once again joining the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the fourth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for teachers, students, and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. Teachers, students, and parents will be asked to take a 20-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. This survey will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation.  Parents, please take this opportunity to respond to the 5Essentials survey now at:  https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/  The deadline is January 16, 2017.

Erin's Law erins law

Governor Pat Quinn signed into law House Bill 6193, or Erin’s Law, on January 24, 2013.  This law mandates that Illinois public schools extend their current mandated educational programs regarding personal safety, abuse education and prevention curriculum to students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades.  The goal of the law is to teach children to avoid situations that may lead to abuse and to report any instances of abuse they may have endured.

On Friday December 2, 2016 Burbank School District 111 held its Third Annual Talent Show.  The stage was filled with talent from every school.  Almost every seat in the house was filled with family, friends and staff.  We are so proud of all our students that performed in our talent show!

Join representatives from Carnegie Learning and the Curriculum Department as we dive into how students think, learn and apply new knowledge in math!  Parents and community members are invited to attend this evening’s discussion focused on our new grade 6-8 math program, Carnegie Learning.  This session will focus on this innovative, research-based math curricula, Standards for Mathematical Practice and why math looks so different (but truly isn’t!).  Students are encouraged to attend with their parents.  Click here for more information.

Art for the Sky

Daniel Dancer operates an artist program called Art For The Sky.  It is a unique team building and perception activity that deepens the students' relationship to the sky, earth and one another.  Dr. Sheehan and the Tobin Team worked together with the entire community to learn about the power of collaboration and the beauty of our interconnection to all life.  

Fall Fertilization & Weed Control Application

2017 School Board Elections election

Burbank School District 111 will have four school board seats to be filled at the April 4, 2017 Consolidated Election.  Candidates who are elected will fill four-year terms expiring in April 2021.  Candidates for the office of school board can begin to circulate nominating petitions for signatures beginning September 20, 2016.  The candidate filing period begins on December 12, 2016 and ends December 19, 2016.

 

District 111 Welcomes New Board Member announcement

A special board meeting was held September 13 to interview seven candidates for our board member vacancy.  All residents who submitted letters of interest were interviewed.  The board was impressed with each applicant’s quality of thought and vision for 111.  After much deliberation; we are pleased to announce the board of education unanimously appointed Trish Saunders.  

 

2016-2017 Updated Liberty Bus Routes

In an effort to help decrease the number of students on the Liberty school buses, we have added several new bus routes.  The new routes for Liberty will go into effect Monday, September 19, 2016.  2016-2017 Updated Bus Routes

Two Day Cheer Camp

Calling All Future Rams!  Reavis High School's Cheerleading Squad will be hosting a two day cheer camp! Campers will attend a cheer clinic on October 13 to go over some cheer basics and also learn a routine. They will perform their short routine during the varsity half-time show on October 14.

Talent Show Auditions

Burbank's Got Talent!  District 111's Third Annual Talent Show will be held on Friday, December 2 at 7:00 pm at Liberty.  Auditions are open to all students in grades 5-8 and will be held at Liberty in the MPR at 3:30 pm.

Burbank School District 111 is excited to offer online registration through InfoSnap beginning with the 2016-2017 school year for all returning students.  InfoSnap is a secure and green online registration process.  By now you should have received a personalized letter via U.S. mail that includes your secure log-in (snapcode).  You will need this to begin the registration process.

Pre-School Screenings

Burbank School District 111 will be conducting a Developmental Screening for 3-4 year old children.  The purpose of the screening is to determine the educational needs of your child.  Qualified personnel will conduct a developmental screening in the following areas:  Motor Development, Speech & Language, Thinking Skills, and Vision & Hearing.

Maddock Teacher Granted Fellowship in Germany

Burbank School District 111’s very own Maddock 6th grade teacher, Ms. Karen Krzystof-Bansley, was granted a summer fellowship through The Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP) in Germany. TOP is a non-profit, public/private Partnership between the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and other private German businesses.

Construction Kick-Off Meetings - UPDATE

Construction Kick-off Meetings have been held with several groups to gather information about the design and construction of the New Luther Burbank School.  The architects from Cannon Design presented modern design ideas and discussed current trends in education.  They've been able to gather invaluable information from these interactive and collaborative meetings.  Here's a few pictures and details from the meetings that have been held.    

2016 Summer Chess Camp

The Southwest Chicago Chess Club is offering a Summer Chess Camp in Burbank.  Join the club to learn or improve your game of chess.  The camp is open to ages 5 - 13, beginner to intermediate players.  Stickney Township will be supplying a tournament chess set to keep. 

Reavis STEM Camp for 6th & 7th Graders STEM

Reavis High School will be hosting a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Camp for sixth and seventh grade students from June 14th to June 16th.  Sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.   Students who attend this camp will learn about electricity, discover ways to generate electricity, and build electrical devices.  Students will also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in a fun environment.  The camp will be hands-on, project-oriented and action packed.   There is no cost to attend but space is limited to the first 30 students who apply.   If you are interested in registering your son or daughter for this camp please call Mr. LaMantia at Reavis High School at 708-599-7200 Ext. 201.  

Gallery 111 - Digital Art Exhibit

Burbank School District 111's Art Exhibition was held on May 12, 2016.  The artwork of our outstanding artists was displayed and proudly exhibited for everyone to view and admire.  Three winners were selected from each school and those pieces are currently on display in the board room at the Administration Building.  

Liberty Graduation will be Live Streaming

Summer School Bus Routes bus

The following bus routes will be offered to the students attending Summer School June 6-16.   All of the students enrolled in the program may take the bus of their choice.  If you choose, you may drive or walk your child to Tobin School, 8501 S. Narragansett.  Busses will drop off in the rear lot of the school, parents may use the front lot to bring their child to school.   Click here for the complete route list.

Seamless Summer Food Program

When school is out, thousands of children must search for nutritious meals – and too often these meals cannot be found at home.  USDA’s Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option help bridge the gap by providing FREE food to children at various sites in the community during the summer.

 

Construction Kick-Off Meeting for Perimeter Residents cone

We understand that residents who own homes around the perimeter of Burbank School may have some unique concerns regarding the construction.  Please join us for an interactive and collaborative meeting to gather information about the design and construction of the New Luther Burbank School.  This Construction Kick-off Meeting will be held Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the District Office, 7600 S. Summer Teen Mixers at the Water Park swim

Burbank Park District will be hosting two summer teen mixers at the Burbank Water Park on July 27 and August 17 from 8:15 to 10:00 p.m.  Entrance is $5 at the door for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders only.

 

  

St. Baldrick's Day Update st. baldricks

The top five St. Baldrick's Day fundraisers were recognized by the board of education at the April 27 board meeting.  Our Third Annual St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser was held on March 18 with a goal to raise $40,000.  With special thanks to our numerous event organizers, 100 sponsors, 40 ponytail donors, and 75 shavees, we are proud to announce that the total amount raised this year was $47,870.81.

District 111's Third Annual Multicultural Night was held April 14.  The event was organized by the PAC Committee which includes administrators, staff, and parents.  Over 35 countries are represented in District 111.  Here's a video highlighting the evening's events.

Burbank School Construction Focus Groups - Updated!

We are pleased to announce that firms have been selected for architectural services and construction management.  We look forward to working with Cannon Design and International Contractors, Inc. as we move along in the planning phase.  The administration is continuing to meet with various focus groups to gather input regarding what they'd like to see in the new building.  We will continue to post updates as we move along in this process.  Click here to view notes from some focus groups that have already met.

Red Nose Day - May 26 red nose

Red Nose Day is a campaign dedicated to helping children and having fun.  Proceeds benefit children and young people in poverty in the US and some of the poorest communities in the world.  Red Nose Day is Thursday, May 26 - our last day of school!  What better way to celebrate a great school year than to support a worthy cause.  All schools will be selling red noses for $1.00.  For more information about Red Nose Day, please visit www.rednoseday.org.

 

Fry School Presents "Annie KIDS" May 5

The sun will come out tomorrow......when Fry School's theatre group presents its production of Annie KIDS on Thursday, May 5th 7:00 p.m. at Liberty Junior High School, 5900 West 81st Street.  Based on the popular comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” Annie KIDS tells of a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who left her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan.

Burbank School Construction Update

District 111 posted a Request for Qualifications for Architectural Services and Construction Management Firms.  The submissions received were narrowed down to four firms from each category.  Building tours and interviews will be held the week of April 11.  A final decision will be made at the April 27 regular board meeting.

Focused Monitoring Public Forum

Our district has been selected by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) for a focused monitoring review of the educational placement decisions for students with disabilities.  The selection of our district was based on district data that we submitted to ISBE.  The purpose of focused monitoring is to investigate compliance with federal and state special education laws and regulations. 

District 111 Graduates Receive Chick Evans Scholarships

The Reavis High School Guidance Department has announced that Kevin McDonald and Mohamad Zeid have been selected as Chick Evans Scholars!  Chick Evans is a rigorous scholarship in which those selected are granted a full ride scholarhsip for all four years to an Evans college/university. 

District 111 Art Exhibition 2016

District 111 is hosting a district-wide art exhibition on May 12 at Prairie Trails Public Library.  Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible to participate.  Submissions are due April 22, 2016.

Teachers' Flea Market

A Teachers' Flea Market will be held on April 23, 2016 at Maddock School from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Sellers' tables are available - $20 for 7ft or $30 for 14ft.  To reserve a table or request additional information, please contact Charise at TeachersMarket@aol.com.   

Request for Qualifications

The Board of Education for Burbank School District 111 is soliciting Statements of Interest and Qualifications from qualified firms to provide comprehensive Construction Management Services and Architectural Services for the construction of a new elementary school building.
