Safety Procedure Overview

Burbank School District 111 has implemented comprehensive safety procedures to prioritize the well-being and security of students, staff, and the school community. These procedures cover various aspects such as emergency response protocols, visitor screening, surveillance systems, access control measures, behavior management strategies, and reporting mechanisms for incidents of bullying and safety concerns. By adhering to these procedures, the district aims to create a safe and conducive learning environment where all individuals can thrive and feel protected. Collaboration with law enforcement agencies and ongoing training programs further enhance the effectiveness of the safety procedures in place.

Purpose: To ensure the safety and security of all students and staff.

Visitor Management

All visitors to school buildings are screened in a secure vestibule using the ident-a-kid Visitor Management System. Visitors must scan their valid driver's license to obtain a badge before entering the school. The software immediately alerts staff if a visitor is identified as a risk. The ident-a-kid System also allows school officials to enter information about Orders of Protection, Trespass Notices, or other community alerts. Once approved, visitors must sign in and out of the front office.

Visitors are expected to comply with all Board of Education policies and school conduct procedures. Visitors to and Conduct on School Property (Board Policy 8:30)

Schools are busy places.  Please make an appointment whenever possible.  If we cannot verify who you are or the purpose of your visit, you may not be let into the building.  Please do not be offended.  We must ensure the safety of our students and staff.  Please abide by additional building-specific guidelines.

  • Must identify themselves and the purpose of the visit.
  • May not be allowed into the building and may be asked to leave items outside of the building or in another designated area.
  • May be asked to call the school to make an appointment.
  • May be asked to provide official identification.
  • May not let in other visitors. Each visitor must be screened and “buzzed in” separately.
  • During special events, we ask that you follow staff directions. We want to be able to continue to welcome families to the buildings but will also do so through the lens of student and staff safety.

Building Security

All exterior and interior doors are locked and remain locked throughout the school day.

Soft Lockdown procedures are as follows:

  • Exterior doors locked at all times.
  • Entrance to visitors only through designated areas.
  • Visitors must identify themselves and the purpose of the visit prior to being allowed into the building’s secured area.
  • Interior Doors are locked when students are present.
  • Access to classrooms per teacher permission.

Hard Lockdown procedures as follows:

A hard lock down may occur if there is a potential threat in the immediate or surrounding area. If the school district receives notice from the Burbank Police Department that there is police activity in the area, or if the school/district deems it is necessary, schools assume Hard Lock procedures as a precautionary measure.

  • District and school administrators alert staff.
  • Students, staff, and visitors remain in the building.
  • No one (excluding key staff or First Responders) may enter or exit the building.
  • No outdoor P.E. or recess will be conducted.
  • When notified by police that the incident has been resolved, schools receive All Clear and soft lock down is resumed.
  • When applicable, parents will be notified that we instituted our Hard Lockdown procedures.
  • Phone calls will not be made unless there is an immediate threat to students/staff and parent and community action must be taken. We must focus our attention on our buildings and the safety of our students and staff.
  • Parents and the community will be informed using our most current notification procedures as needed.
